Update:Still Recovering.....

Haven't updated in about month....I guess because there is not much to update about.

My plans to tackle the upcoming winter riding strong, have been foiled by a careless and stupid injury (on my side). It's been healing bit by bit, but from what I've read, the lack of good blood circulation to this area of the wrist causes it to heal slowly. Scaphoid fracture or not....it sure is a pain in the butt.

The doctors at the hospital I went to here in Beijing have proven themselves quite spectacularly pointless and unhelpful. At the hospital, with a Chinese speaker assisting me, I ended prescribing my own care plan for my wrist, with the doctor just agreeing to whatever I said. Maybe I should have just thrown out amputation....he probably would have replied with a resolute "yes".

In the meantime I have been training indoors on a magnetic resistance trainer. These are in the middle range when it comes to trainers, being slightly more expensive, but quieter than fan based ones, but not providing a smooth or as consistent resistance as a more expensive fluid trainer.
It's being able to keep a cadence (mine is about 95-110 RPM) without any interruptions, but staring at the wall and travelling no where does get a bit drab after a while.

The current lull in cycling, and fortunate streak of decent air quality, has had me pick up some more running again. Other than that, I have begun looking at some future prospective bicycle upgrades, which I will list soon.

A little about the injury....I went out cycling with the foreign bicycling group, the Beijing Peloton. The day's ride was a 76 km course through the mountains in the northwest of the city, about 60 km out. The whole ride had been going very well, and I was able to drop the group while on the climbs. The last climb of the day was a short and sweet (steep) one, with constant switchbacks and breathtaking views. All of this meant that the resulting downhill would be the same just...going downhill. After smashing the hill, I hit the descent with an ego too big for my bike and I bonked out about 3/4 of the way down, going around 60 kmph. I was able to slow enough, but my left interior wrist still took quite a bit of the force. As with all crashes, I felt fine right after, but that night it felt as if my whole body had been hit by a train....bruises all over my butt made it hard to sleep!

I guess this is one of the most common injuries for men under the age of 23...definitely learned my lesson, as this recovery process is taking way too long...I've missed some really nice days for riding, as well as a chance to begin using some of the cold weather gear I got.

These injuries got me down, so I ended up splurging on a new "around the town" bike from Cycle Base Asahi, a Japanese company with various stores in Japan and one in China. I had been growing tired of my fold up bicycle, with 20" wheels, and I didn't even use the folding function. Not to mention, fold up bicycle are extremely heavy, considering their size and "portability".

Very fitting name for a bicycle. I chose the navy blue model.

This bicycle rides very nicely, and is surprisingly quite light. I have a spare Shimano SORA rear derailleur I'll install on it later. Simple and functional.

More updates to come, as I will have access to better internet stability in South Korea.
