Late Update - May 14th - Pre-Race Day
Haven't had a chance to get back to this since my Blogger app crashed.
Anyways, day before the Sado Long Ride. Got up early, after a night of prepping ingredients to make ramen for lunch.
Today's plan was to ride out towards Lake Kamo, to see some environmental conservation work being done on some a small estuary there. The program was being led by a friend of the hostel owner. She explained to me that she had been trying to enlist the help of the local fishermen in cleaning up the estuary, as they were some of it's biggest polluters.
Winds were fairly strong, but the weather was great. Not a cloud in sight.
I decided to take a short tour of the island that my 130 km course of the race would not cover.
Biking to Ryotsu, I headed down highway 45. The scenery was beautiful.
I continued to ride, until I realized my mistake. I had promised to make ramen for lunch at 1:00 pm. I biked too far to go back on the 45 to reach the hostel in time. Looking at my maps I decided to try and haul ass on the route 319, passing by Mt.Yoneyama and Mt. Kunimi. This would be one of the most difficult climbs I have done. Constant switchbacks from the coast, but then leading to a nice long beautiful descent through the mountains and back into Ryotsu.
Made it back to the hostel by lunch, and set about preparing ramen! After lunch was the bicycle race registration on the other side of the island. I got my bib and was ready to go for the next day!

Heading down Route 45 there are lot's of small islands with little shrines on them. |

Route 319 highlighted. Climbs up at a very steep grade with many switchbacks passing by small farm fields. The descent was amazing. |

Miso ramen made with Chikako-sans own homemade miso! |
We made everything from scratch, except for the noodles. |
Some other riders I met at the hostel mentioned to me that I was easy to spot during the race... |
